Spanish Swordsmen

These are plastic figures for the board game Anno Domini 1666. I don't really care much about the game itself, but the figures look good, so I bought some of the expansion sets. They are useful for small urban skirmishes, or I can run the four swordsmen (including a NOT Viggo Mortensen Alatriste) for The Pikeman's Lament as a four figure Aggressive Forlorn unit.

It was kind of difficult to get a profile shot with those big hats. Painting them was all good: the figures come pre-assembled with the base, I guess to please the boardgamer crowd. The plastic was bendy and I was not satisfied with the female figure's gear, so I made a few modifications: one swordsman received a chopped off Perry plastic sword blade pinned to the original hilt, and Francisca (at least that's her name according to the manufacturer) got a proper matchlock, a string to sling it over her back, a longer rapier scabbard, a big soft hat with feathers and a musket rest.

The sculpting is quite nice but it is obvious they did not have figure painters' comfort in mind when designing these, some areas are hard to reach and the faces are especially tiny. One reason I like Bloody Miniatures for example is that the details are nice and crisp AND also easy to paint.
