Games Day Budapest 2015

This was the third such event I attended, missing only one since the starting of the blog. It is very close to my Budapest dwelling actually, only five stops by bus, so I felt obligated to visit. In the end I did not regret it, but, mainly due to little sleep, I did not feel as comfortable as last year.
Still, it was enjoyable as usual, crowded as usual, and the variety of games differed very little from those in the past. When saying radical things such as this an educated person like myself instantaneously feels the need to blunt the edge of his opinion before a mass of enraged hard-core Games Workshop fans appear (as used to be the case in the Great Space Marine Lynching of '08), but the fact is that while it may be entertaining for some, it was not as much for me as it could have been.

I took only five photos and one of them was not worth posting, so you can visit the official page of the show, I bet they will be sharing/posting more photos: GD Facebook

Games Day Budapest 2014

The yearly 'greatest tabletop wargaming event' held place on Sunday Dec 7. I went out in the morning at about 10am, took 5 stops with a bus to get there. In the last two years the entry fee has been more than before but it's still very cheap. Flea marketers have to pay double amount but I did not go with the intention of buying or selling anything.

Venue is still in a primary school's gym and at the time it was very crowded. This post is going to focus more on historical games and what I joined in and played.

Games Day part III - Retreat from Moscow

The last post on the Games Day topic is the game I participated in, a little scenario played with 28mm figs and the Song of Drums and Shakos rules. The French had to get their carriage through the table and the Russian Cossacks and Jäger planned an ambush to stop them.
I played the French with a lot of support from the hosts then I picked up the pace, it was an interesting but time-consuming game and I had to leave it hanging in the air after two hours.
Out of courtesy I shot photos only while the enemy (the Russians) were moving so maybe I missed some of the action, here it is anyway:

Games Day part II - the inspiration

A follow-up on yesterday's post, this one to show all the eye-candy and tables I could visit.

Napoleonic battle between Brits and French: the British are enhanced with cola. There weren't any players around and it was like that for the rest of the day, sadly for me.

From the tables and the vendors I wandered to the competition table, and have been amazed by the quality of work. 'Army' category above.

Games Day part I - intro + loot

This year's Games Day here in Budapest was very well attended and I could do a lot of photos and also join a game so that is at least two posts' material. See the 'hall' above, this was at about 1pm and we stayed until 4pm, so yes, took our (my) time - I dragged two friends and the game I played was that held us there.

Here's what I got from a limited budget: a detail brush (Vallejo), a 12-sided dice and an Airfix Mk I Male tank which had not been in the plans but saw it, and as I could never find any earlier just had to buy it. There is also a little change in my Xmas plans, I'll order some Essex 15mm pike&shot minis instead of the Pro Gloria figs. Those will get to me too but a bit later.
More studying is on the schedule but I'll squeeze some time in and make those posts anyway. Stay tuned!

Mesr Wars vehicles and thoughts on Games Day

Mesr Wars vehicles
1. The AFVs must have some visible clockworks on the surface for coolness (although I'm not quite sure how they help in combat). Basically I could put my hands on some sorted-out or crashed clocks and watches to acquire some, and combine them with existing models, such as a KV (still hanging around this idea, may try it once). They'd also need chimneys for the steam engines. - Planning to go to a close-by flea market to find other useful material.
2. Multi-turreted vehicles and extremely high "siege towers". Let the imagination speak and use unhandy designs.

Games Day 2011
Just wished to have an overall sight of the events and how and what was happening, so hadn't settled down to play any games, mostly watched. Some were eventually slow, like the Fifteen Years War and WWI table, while others went on too fast to catch up while wandering between tables. Next time (as I'm quite sure I'm gonna go next year too) I'd like to spend more time in there, sit down and play a game (preferably historical). By the way it's hell awesome how those figures could be! (This oft reminds me of improving my skills with the brush).
