The stacks and air vents are finally applied, but the decks still look bare. What's missing?
Oh right, the guns! Can't have a cruiser without guns.
Comparison shot of aftermarket vs. original one. The original has its charm, that is true.
The aftermarket one is 1/350 so a little bit big, but not overly big. I could have scraped some of the carriage off.
After the big guns come the small guns. The breeches on these are scratchbuilt. I miscalculated and made only five pairs while I needed six, a quick fix can be seen on the image. The breeches are plastic bits glued to a notched toothpick. They were rather fiddly to glue down.
All's well that ends well. The wooden deck also requires some afterthought, because things that should be there aren't at their intended places. I covered these gaps with small squared pieces of 0.5mm plasticard, there are enough deck houses, hatches and whatnot to make them blend in.
The foredeck requires a few more smallish air vents, here I'm trying to make one out of 2mm styrene rod bought for just that purpose. It bubbled up from the heat and could not be formed as well as I wished.
The spares bin comes to the rescue, these are leftover plastic bits from the kit, much more easier to shape.
Adding the lower tier of 76mm guns, of which only the barrels are visible. The casemate covers are an interesting contraption, they house the side of the breech in a protruding fashion instead of hugging the end of the barrel like, for example, on the Mikasa.
