From January on I started summarizing what I paint, the first two months being the test period for the method. I keep the total tally in a separate diary, but thought it would be a good idea to post it here.
Further on I limit my scope of activities to up to five projects per month, which helps me focus better on the current tasks instead of meandering and starting minor side-projects, never finishing one.
1. Hobby Projects
My main projects for the month were:
- Reduce the Perry and Warlord Italian Wars pile - not a success, hadn't done any of it except three riders from the ECW/TYW lot
- 1/2000 scale Denmark Strait and 1/1000 scale Trashy Fleets- good progress made with seven ships finished
- Start gaming the Floyet House mini-campaign - no gaming at all. I painted a chicken coop/sheep pen, and purchased some scenery (green fields of corn, hedges)
- KiK block proxy armies - no progress at all
- The fifth was left blank at the beginning of the month, this became a 6mm SYW venture with my Commission Figurines purchase from last year.
For the most part I was able to limit my activities to things related to these, but some other things also came up, like some Oldmarines, 1/72 interwar vehicles, and pirates.
2. Painting Total
From 1-31 March I finished painting:
1/1000 scale ships
1x battleship
1x TBD
4x monitors
1/2000 scale
1x battleship
28mm:
1x space marine dreadnought
1x terminator captain
2x regular oldmarines
3x Warlord mounted mousquetaires
3x homecast Cossacks
2x giant forest spiders (Halloween toys but in roughly 28mm scale)
6mm:
2 command
4 cannon and 16 crew
96 infantry
24 cavalry
I primed a bunch of 6mm figures, assembled a few 28mm plastic ones and did some terrain pieces. There is a Zvezda 1/350 galleon on my desk which awaits a layer of varnish and oil wash.
I also came up with a value-based system to monitor my output per month in comparable numbers, so I invented the Painting Unit, which gives me points after each finished/painted/assembled figure.
Total Painting Unit for the month: 1134
As you can see sometimes I finish a lot more than I submit on the blog, the best example is the Orcs I recently posted but finished about two years ago. It takes good natural lighting conditions and motivation to start taking photos, and I found it's better to do them in droves than one-offs.
3. Purchases
These days I usually buy a few smaller items per month as The Pile is already growing rapidly and I have to keep up with storing/organizing the collection.
This month I only bought:
- a 1/72 Vickers light tank and a Sopwith Camel
- three pots of paint
- a 2' section of hedges from a railroad modelling store
- a box of Frostgrave: Ghost Archipelago crewmen for a pirates project
- a bunch of 25mm clear disc bases for the pirates
- two plastic containers from Jysk to house my 17th century collection (will most likely purchase more)
