Holy League Block Galley Flotilla

I managed to paint three more 1/350 scale galleys during the previous months. Being scratch-built they take a rather long time to assemble, but I think they were worth the wait. From left to right, they are: a standard Venetian galley with a single mast (sail furled), a Spanish lanterna (or the big 'un), a Maltese standard size galley.

I experimented more with colour printed decorative elements to save a bit of time on painting. Their masts, prow, forecastle and stern can all be removed from the models to show damage, so those pieces are painted in subassemblies. Making the masts removable helps with storage, too.

The Knights of St John are ready to take on the Ottoman curse in the Levant, or grab a beer at a summer beach, or pillage some unfortunate Greek island, as is their custom.

The lanterna has paperclip oars, arranged using the method with a thread between the two end points, described on the 'Block Galleys' page of the blog, available through the header menu.

The Venetian galley is a bit more basic than the other two, but still packs a punch. For the banner I took a simple Lion of St Mark clip art I found on the internet and resized it.

I think I'll make a pair of galiots for the Ottomans and then I can have them fight each other. My table size wouldn't allow more than five or six ships per side anyway.
