Orion Foot Cossacks & Artillery

Here is the whole bunch finished - 33 figures and two guns (I apparently lost one figure as the set has 34). Neat little figs and painted up rather easily.

All of them has the same treatment: black undercoat, blocked parts, Vallejo Umber wash, then highlights. The guy in the yellow robe has been washed with Vallejo Sepia as I found it more suitable.

The Sich All Stars cheerleader team.
Problem with the set is out of 34 figs six are non-coms (four dancers and two priests) and another six (well eight actually, but I transferred the two guys smoking their pipes to the main force) are gun crews - and this leaves a not so formidable force of actual fighting people.

Here are the two guns, they come with a lot of extra parts (buckets and stacked up cannonballs) which I didn't bother including. The guns are put together easily but there are some ugly mold lines. The figures have some flash too and another lot of mold lines, some of which I forgot to remove.

I like the smoking figure a lot. While I did not intend them to be this colorful (and most have very dull colors - leather brown, buff and grey) there are some outstanding purple and yellow robes.

This one pointing and raising his sword plus a cap with a better design could be a commander. The priest is there to boost morale.

For the bases I mixed Revell Dark Earth & Leather Brown to differ a little from the original 100% Dark Earth - easier distinction and some diversity.

I'd recommend this set very much if someone wants to do Cossacks but they should be supplemented with the Orion cavalry box and the Zvezda set to achieve a larger force.

The new backdrop - painted by me - works a little better, if anything because of its size.

  2. Nice work. I do like an army with dancers! A pre-victory dance. Now that is styling. Also, "super nice painted backdrop!"

    1. Thank you; I think the backdrop works well, not sure about the dancers. I'll find some way to put them on the table.

  3. You should consider the dancing guys actually doing kung-fu. :)
    The ladies... I dunno.

Or this is the beginning of the Cossacks doing the Zaporozhian Shake. Now only a couple of them, next moment the whole army will be busy with some weird dance. Watch out for them!

    1. They don't even have pistols in their sashes - could be useful for a little diorama or I don't know. The two women are interesting pieces but their garments aren't really everyday wear so no use for them as simple villagers.

Could do the Sich shake or Hmelnitsky Shake and so on.
