Finished - Fricklander Dragoons

These are, again, from the Italeri Scot Greys re-issued set finished quite a long time after I bought it. 18 horsemen with good poses, but they had some trouble with the acrylic varnish I bought.

The varnish can't be mixed - it's a matte one which means it's white when it is applied and when adding black to it the two become blue together? I mean, what? So these ones had a black wash, then a layer of plain varnish which then didn't really dry the way I wanted, some repairs again and it would do then...

Command figs on the flank here.

A bird's eye view.

What can be told on the positive side is the acrylic varnish is perfect for basing, prepping and applying finish (basically everything but dipping, for which I would use it the most). It also holds static grass much better than the Revell enamel one, guess because it's less fluid and can take more straws.
This little troublemaking, however, means I can't finish the Fricklander FNG Grenadiers this week, some lesser jobs such as rebasing my Vikings and making them more 'matt' and a painted single metal fig is to come - plus a short 'report' from my visit to the local flea market and the loot I had there. Interestingly I can always make more posts than I thought when checking what to do :)

  1. I really like those, varnish issues can be such a pain in the crackers!

  2. I think these look smashing. The white on the far right is my favorite and white is hard to get right. I didn't know you could use varnish for static grass-I'll tuck that one in my cap!

    1. Thank you; I usually suffer a lot with white, this time I undercoated with a light gray and got it right. In my experience varnish is pretty multi-functional as you could have figured out from the post :)

  3. A splendid unit Andrew and I know what you mean about the perils of varnish. They seem to react totally independently of logic sometimes!
