In some aspects it is rather vague and/or flexible, but nothing that can't be addressed. </span></p><p style="text-align: justify;">After abandoning the original Inter Arma 1.0 rules, I made One Page Meeple Warfare and Campaigns in the Ancient World for some easier going experience. The former was too bloody and the latter grid-based, thus larger games got boring very fast. </p><p style="text-align: justify;">Gudugan Pudugan attempts to address both of these issues: command and friction are way more interesting, combat is decisive, somewhat more unpredictable and comes with less individual figure/unit removal, so it should not drag on endlessly.</p><p style="text-align: justify;">I've had these meeples for earlier games, but did not use them much, and it was a chore to move them one by one. So I got some sticky glue and ordered pill-shaped 30x60mm bases from MKZ Games in Spain, and made units for <i>Gudugan Pudugan</i> this way - these are the first test pieces to see whether the concept works.</p><p><br /></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgQYFpIPZ098Ozx5t_LtHT4cZ9c1ariV45D3i07S8fjit2aUTJslOBpxFqSWlEyIxgbmfBSLkFCqKOHHmrl2NmhlJe5M1xxolldgyMLS09TBJUfLV1n9e-ACS3h8G6bTOOkMI8j-yB32lHfwCpea9fC75-XFXho998i8FLHLvEhmfjLWP0Oh3KbEH5jjHfp/s3412/1707328889662.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1752" data-original-width="3412" height="164" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgQYFpIPZ098Ozx5t_LtHT4cZ9c1ariV45D3i07S8fjit2aUTJslOBpxFqSWlEyIxgbmfBSLkFCqKOHHmrl2NmhlJe5M1xxolldgyMLS09TBJUfLV1n9e-ACS3h8G6bTOOkMI8j-yB32lHfwCpea9fC75-XFXho998i8FLHLvEhmfjLWP0Oh3KbEH5jjHfp/s320/1707328889662.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">Here's how the troop types are represented. Cavalry is made from larger meeples turned around ninety degress (the differentiation between shooty and melee cavalry will be done by the number of meeples on the base and their colour). The chariot, I think, is a tad too big, but I don't intend to use many of them.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">The cool aspect of using sticky glue (almost-Blutac) is that I can represent casualties by tilting over the figures on their base and gluing them back on, and can rearrange entire armies using the same supply of bases as well.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">For larger armies with more subcommanders, I'm going to add small banners to the units to differentiate between meeples of the same type/colour.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;"><i>*The name means One Who Makes Coils.</i></div><br /> <p></p>Andrew McCoryhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18203034461676669716noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5375223151643195646.post-12865868906273234372024-02-07T19:36:00.005+01:002024-02-07T19:42:46.719+01:00Trashy Fleets - 1/1000 Royal Navy pre-dreadnought<p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjompthEbSIeQQS_IZztdy26hhfbyiUzSWndU-7Kt_LWjiqohaIYEGKW4qSphj-DqClSe99ZIQ7pcc8BB76Gr1iu6chAjQOOaUdYr2hH3zdV3qqXRObVJiPEBLYSeUQTzWMci28AzDMf7NO2rVjUrSDX_aieN5ar49GvfdnnywVYpDJGbCTH2CfWquU4lhw/s2896/1706633522929.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2036" data-original-width="2896" height="225" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjompthEbSIeQQS_IZztdy26hhfbyiUzSWndU-7Kt_LWjiqohaIYEGKW4qSphj-DqClSe99ZIQ7pcc8BB76Gr1iu6chAjQOOaUdYr2hH3zdV3qqXRObVJiPEBLYSeUQTzWMci28AzDMf7NO2rVjUrSDX_aieN5ar49GvfdnnywVYpDJGbCTH2CfWquU4lhw/s320/1706633522929.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">By popular demand (that is, the Mad Padre has mentioned in the previous post that he would like to see some ships), here is the first Trashy battleship.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">Now I cheated with this one a little, as the hull was completed some time ago, I just added touch-ups and the base. The casemate housing for the tertiary battery is also made the samee way. </p><p style="text-align: justify;">Here's how I make the funnels: I pick a length of bamboo skewer and trim it on two sides. Most of them are wargaming or military history related:</p><p style="text-align: justify;">- a 4'x4' gaming mat from gamemat.eu - I'll make a separate post about it!</p><p style="text-align: justify;">- a Revell 1/50 Viking ship (all I need is some Vikings)</p><p style="text-align: justify;">- Four packs of Bloody Miniatures 28mm ECW figs, including the newly released Lobsters (some painted during the holidays)</p><p style="text-align: justify;">- A batch of Magic Sculpt</p><p style="text-align: justify;">- A set of GSW silver Kolinsky brushes (a joy to paint with)</p><p style="text-align: justify;">- John Keegan's History of War at Sea</p><p style="text-align: justify;">It feels good to have a supportive partner and she in fact has already joined me for testing the gaming mat.</p><p style="text-align: justify;"><br /></p><p style="text-align: justify;">As for the second part, when it comes to planning, I found that less is more. So the major projections for 2024 are:</p><p style="text-align: justify;">- Expanding the TYW/ECW collection for larger games, I've now got a good amount of figures for larger skirmishes.</p><p style="text-align: justify;">- Starting an Italian Wars collection (had a bunch of Perrys and Landsknechts but sold them in 2020), a Steel Fist unit of kniggits is in the mail back from December.</p><p style="text-align: justify;">- 17th century buildings to populate Trashburgh (construction of an inn is under way).</p><p style="text-align: justify;">- Reviving the 1/1000 scale Trashy Fleets projects (starting with some French pre-dreadnoughts because why not!)</p><p style="text-align: justify;">- Finishing the 1/700 Derfflinger.</p><p style="text-align: justify;">- The odd impulse buy here and there. We are planning two European trips in the Q1 of the year (including the Vasa Museum) so that might just push the bill.</p><p style="text-align: justify;"><br /></p><p style="text-align: justify;">A bit less slightly hobby related but managing my battle station is overdue:</p><p style="text-align: justify;">- I'll get my old drawer cabinet and refurbish it</p><p style="text-align: justify;">- Relocating the hobby desk to an area with better natural light</p><p style="text-align: justify;">- Assembling some shelves to contain figures and the book collection (including the Ikea model with the drawers, pretty cool thing)</p>Andrew McCoryhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18203034461676669716noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5375223151643195646.post-81364245607867954652023-11-23T10:59:00.007+01:002023-11-23T10:59:47.567+01:00Rules Page update<p>I have added no less than three new rulesets to the '<a href="https://randomncreative.blogspot.com/p/rules.html" target="_blank">Rules</a>' page (available via the link or the header of this blog), which are free to download, use and distribute by the way, and are the results of more than ten years of gaming experimentation:</p><p><br /></p><p></p><ul style="text-align: left;"><li><b><i>Gudugan Pudugan</i></b>, a fun little set which is only seven pages long, of pre-historical/ancient big battles and a flexible unit/army component system</li></ul><div><br /></div><ul style="text-align: left;"><li><b><i>Victorious Eagle Warfare 2</i></b>, an update on my go-to Napoleonics set, with better command options and explanations on unit behavior</li></ul><div><br /></div><ul style="text-align: left;"><li><b><i>The Brave Lieutenant</i></b>, a Pike and Shot period set which spent many months in the making, only to bin it altogether in the end and just adopt the useful parts of VEW2 with Renaissance spice.</li></ul><div><br /></div><p></p><p>Please do browse through them.</p>Andrew McCoryhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18203034461676669716noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5375223151643195646.post-87545775469097591862023-10-29T14:09:00.000+01:002023-10-29T14:09:33.736+01:00All the Other Kids With Their Pumped Up 'Nids<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgSnzN9J6wDOPq-qETqmzZ93Wn6jzh-EN9fuUOG5FHFjyqbCa0vmZf2CSoJf7fMf0QgmdmAfD3czm_peENgQXqvPkiAnebm4cccavvlnshLYNTnvQde8E4TomFjAaCJfD0ksqGOwmPpK7VUWLRAhuhgWLxJysiROLE_yCYk_CtAnav11o1B_K9VmLVsKwhH/s3756/20231029_132826.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1784" data-original-width="3756" height="152" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgSnzN9J6wDOPq-qETqmzZ93Wn6jzh-EN9fuUOG5FHFjyqbCa0vmZf2CSoJf7fMf0QgmdmAfD3czm_peENgQXqvPkiAnebm4cccavvlnshLYNTnvQde8E4TomFjAaCJfD0ksqGOwmPpK7VUWLRAhuhgWLxJysiROLE_yCYk_CtAnav11o1B_K9VmLVsKwhH/s320/20231029_132826.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br /><p style="text-align: justify;">I received, second-hand, a group of 20 Termagants and their smaller friends, the push-fit versions from the Leviathan box. It feels good, after more than ten years of hobby time, that I can buy used GW stuff in larger numbers!</p><p style="text-align: justify;"><br /></p><p style="text-align: justify;">However, this post is not about humble bragging, but a sort of warning against artist's block when painting larger batches of figures. Sure, some armies require elaborate paint jobs, but space bugs are <b><u>not</u></b> that. At least this is what I found after painting the first little fellow in a more intricate pattern, got fed up with the thing, wanted to play with them in a painted state, in the end causing myself more frustration and shelving the entire lot for two months or so.</p><p style="text-align: justify;"><br /></p><p style="text-align: justify;">Now two things came to my aid: one, I usually have foresight for happenstances like this, and assemble and/or prime and/or start basing models in my spare time when I do not paint, so I don't have to start from scrap when dusting off an overlooked project. This means that all twenty-odd little bugs were assembled and placed on their bases, waiting for me; and two, I'm more of a pragmatist than an artist in a lot of aspects, so I thought: why not simplify this just a bit? We've all seen very neat and elaborate paint jobs, but, again, that's not for large batches I was trying to deal with here.</p><span><a name='more'></a></span><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgJAeXtlHZjkct5m2bicqPmPe8bZJqrA0PfPYaZnyJmHOo8XrtXql-PtkoIfE-lG2o7DHN9uvb6gpjpOYOc6Ta08aFBTDxgPIJZG4XDHhhYMYJKmjjXyFr98jS0dOdgGKoWSpuUzVyrdR2S_gPsLyswrK4g6Zssz97FVQDssTzMNu6iL5eI34RXc_o7BhN9/s3452/20231029_132937.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2288" data-original-width="3452" height="212" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgJAeXtlHZjkct5m2bicqPmPe8bZJqrA0PfPYaZnyJmHOo8XrtXql-PtkoIfE-lG2o7DHN9uvb6gpjpOYOc6Ta08aFBTDxgPIJZG4XDHhhYMYJKmjjXyFr98jS0dOdgGKoWSpuUzVyrdR2S_gPsLyswrK4g6Zssz97FVQDssTzMNu6iL5eI34RXc_o7BhN9/s320/20231029_132937.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br /><p style="text-align: justify;">So, a short version of my recipe on how to create acceptable looking swarms in the nick of time:</p><p style="text-align: justify;"></p><ol><li>Choose two ugly colours that do not really match, like green and purple, orange brown and bright purplish pink, red and pink etc.</li><li>Prime the space bug, then block paint it in one of the chosen colors, preferably the darker one</li><li>Run a heavy wash of dark brown across the whole thing, let it sit in the recesses in abundance</li><li>Drybrush the entire bug with a lighter shade of the basecoat (a few drops of yellow or white added to the mix will help), rinse and repeat if the lower parts of the body need more definition</li><li>Drybrush the top of the body and other extremities with a bright tone of the other color (when applicable, a darker drybrush on a bright basecoat could look good as well) - for this, a large soft brush and long, even sweeping motions bring the best result, as if one were trying to dust the thing off</li><li>Add gloss varnish</li><li>Paint the base</li><li>Voilá!</li></ol><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgxOn0iaVHK1uv9wygf9otVfVa-Jr0br-Yp-yjnB8CVDQBdG_2lTb5MKH8bVWgfe41GlmHB3yoc9fxLxuq0OAdBxgJHVegm77C7sg5ls0hjokKW25-TW0IEe2lIuVSsjgZYzV2wpF6zQVIb-5BvWJ4dqAftmuLix_lfuMt7A8517svO7VXNftMN-gQ3RbmK/s3452/20231029_132925.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2160" data-original-width="3452" height="200" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgxOn0iaVHK1uv9wygf9otVfVa-Jr0br-Yp-yjnB8CVDQBdG_2lTb5MKH8bVWgfe41GlmHB3yoc9fxLxuq0OAdBxgJHVegm77C7sg5ls0hjokKW25-TW0IEe2lIuVSsjgZYzV2wpF6zQVIb-5BvWJ4dqAftmuLix_lfuMt7A8517svO7VXNftMN-gQ3RbmK/s320/20231029_132925.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><p style="text-align: justify;">I have to admit that the quality of the sculpts did help a lot, with raised areas and recesses being just at the right places. It is decidedly a 'Nids technique, or something similarly buglike and alienoid, and it won't work for others. </p><p style="text-align: justify;">But hey, I have just learned about another technique that might, and it's called 'Slomp Chomp' or something like that, google it up.</p><p style="text-align: justify;"></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://i.ytimg.com/vi/q_YFIY4L0EI/sddefault.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="480" data-original-width="640" height="240" src="https://i.ytimg.com/vi/q_YFIY4L0EI/sddefault.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><p style="text-align: justify;">Now the other half of the box I did something else with, which is a H.R. Giger meets rose beetle type of experiment, thanks to the colorshift line of Green Stuff World paints. This was done the same way as the above, with black (dark grey drybrush) and medium green as the chosen colours, but then, after adding the gloss varnish, I added the GSW Martian Green paint to the carapace and guns and claws, and I think they look nice enough. </p><p style="text-align: justify;"><br /></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiQ6o_z9j1-22WrHGXZ4AFkJxppi5pRdAhsx54EIT6vxZ-ucq5nHY-fW_Vw1Uw0fT__NARceTJKkvPuHx6cy4Tgp0eMpMpGz2Lrt6d_Ue6rtlgrNTtwqOR6ct7vhjG0C0z0YSNSPS4Dk4Q252EJ01kBzavCXA-EgBCk5KA8kcM6-gYpk5uFTiwkYsgsTXNW/s2812/20231029_132945.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2060" data-original-width="2812" height="234" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiQ6o_z9j1-22WrHGXZ4AFkJxppi5pRdAhsx54EIT6vxZ-ucq5nHY-fW_Vw1Uw0fT__NARceTJKkvPuHx6cy4Tgp0eMpMpGz2Lrt6d_Ue6rtlgrNTtwqOR6ct7vhjG0C0z0YSNSPS4Dk4Q252EJ01kBzavCXA-EgBCk5KA8kcM6-gYpk5uFTiwkYsgsTXNW/s320/20231029_132945.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjNdfVtkC64S6p_EsK9P78BmPz-0FM43SmVxHsDq0vNyLT1d6hSg630hvoN0jVJf5xDyXwKzgRsFJnKq5ixui7FPqPc5p23tYKNvdkb51WBLalPjkQHgDsMmfEtCzWiCuA6Hs8Ft60Lp1wuNkPWVsqEZUB-_vcxo5K73jo47KPQy81mj32r1nQBMgezdkAc/s2324/20231029_132957.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1496" data-original-width="2324" height="206" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjNdfVtkC64S6p_EsK9P78BmPz-0FM43SmVxHsDq0vNyLT1d6hSg630hvoN0jVJf5xDyXwKzgRsFJnKq5ixui7FPqPc5p23tYKNvdkb51WBLalPjkQHgDsMmfEtCzWiCuA6Hs8Ft60Lp1wuNkPWVsqEZUB-_vcxo5K73jo47KPQy81mj32r1nQBMgezdkAc/s320/20231029_132957.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br /><p style="text-align: justify;">(They are actually a lot greener under natural light, it's just the camera making tricks, but I think I proved my point.)</p><p style="text-align: justify;">When mixing them with their brighter fellows, I could explain it by saying that one batch specialise on night or underground fighting. I know there are commercially available ones, for example the injection-moulded pieces offered by Renedra, but I went the cheap way.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">After experimenting some, here's the complete method to Build Your Own Gabion, also called the Gyros Method:</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><ol><li>Glue some corkboard together in layers, up to your desired height</li><li>Once dry, using a scalpel shave it down to a cylindrical form (hence the name)</li><li>Place it on a washer (I used wooden buttons from Pepco)</li><li>Place six or so bamboo sticks around the gyros meat's circumference, evenly distributed</li><li>Dunk one end of a long thread into CA glue and tug it under one of the supporting bamboo sticks</li><li>Once that end of the thread is set, wind the thread around the thing, going from bottom to top</li><li>When it's covered up to the desired height, cut the thread and add a few dots of CA glue for extra sturdiness</li><li>Once dry, coat the thing in PVA, the thread will swell and become less pliable</li><li>Add some PVA and dirt on the base and the top of the gabion</li><li>Now you can paint it, I used simple brown colours and a beige drybrush (it is preferred to wait 1-2 days for the PVA to dry completely, otherwise the layers of paint over it might crackle).</li></ol></div><div style="text-align: justify;">First I tried making the wicker basket and filling it up, but the force of the thread wound around the supports made it look a little bit weird. By creating the core from corkboard first, you can also be assured of a regular shape and size throughout your production line. It's also a good way to dispose of corkboard scraps left over from other projects.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">These are for 28mm figures, but I guess they could be replicated for any other scale as well. Also the same method could be used to produce wicker fences.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><p></p>Andrew McCoryhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18203034461676669716noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5375223151643195646.post-90009362295651014292023-10-16T10:02:00.000+02:002023-10-16T10:02:36.217+02:00Fire in the Night<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgnpuzhveB4cIcxI85XbggvAodZo1Xm2Qj7Nb17tDTSsx8xiam_b0haK0YIELLEXJ4nyXyEd_Hljtdr6KMMdWt3qJ6vNQHV27uupvS6XFjawfI3SQTY_YKCfPtKbsVn9C2ftGRUCvTL3lIElpWdGIRvuACS-lho9woGC6GkGh_CwqL-G1erMZyCRQ2U4hVD/s3148/20230924_130530.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1348" data-original-width="3148" height="137" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgnpuzhveB4cIcxI85XbggvAodZo1Xm2Qj7Nb17tDTSsx8xiam_b0haK0YIELLEXJ4nyXyEd_Hljtdr6KMMdWt3qJ6vNQHV27uupvS6XFjawfI3SQTY_YKCfPtKbsVn9C2ftGRUCvTL3lIElpWdGIRvuACS-lho9woGC6GkGh_CwqL-G1erMZyCRQ2U4hVD/s320/20230924_130530.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><div><span style="text-align: justify;"><br /></span></div><div><span style="text-align: justify;">At midnight, a small Holy Alliance squadron creeps to the entrance of the Pirate Bay. </span></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiE_FZ_Sf1ZpFVhg7OK4ti62UCt0OJrZeJWoTJZTmquAo_UwVOFD4Mlf5evOdXlrrENGrs2LtcPgmRbn5TYMuizSOuVOgsSliv8_6tvDQdoDsbKfYBE_aaD6i8Kff5XhN6njI-1VRTqZjagPwaJ71zLqbg8j_ryuddY4pQWci0OfPTBUBtKp-3IGZrlBPYZ/s3708/20230924_131946.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1676" data-original-width="3708" height="145" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiE_FZ_Sf1ZpFVhg7OK4ti62UCt0OJrZeJWoTJZTmquAo_UwVOFD4Mlf5evOdXlrrENGrs2LtcPgmRbn5TYMuizSOuVOgsSliv8_6tvDQdoDsbKfYBE_aaD6i8Kff5XhN6njI-1VRTqZjagPwaJ71zLqbg8j_ryuddY4pQWci0OfPTBUBtKp-3IGZrlBPYZ/s320/20230924_131946.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><div><br /></div><div>A single vessel detaches and, using the stars, the wind and dead reckoning, steers the furthest away path from the batteries guarding the harbour.</div><div><br /></div><span><a name='more'></a></span><div><br /></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhz1q0TuuArDRMMJQnKYLdsvJsROSxiGhJL6hNlBZhwlVxlPq3YamAsLO1x3FDI9Z_3funZztW8__Awc8VDK_AVrU45hMXt6bcRAQsr6xR2QqmIiMcQX2iYSiRXWZr4qK0mIHw_uaNdVdh4-FBsgrkQoxBCafF6bR_e3vNKuACoG5Gujo9Q3Ai9k3DQWys8/s3088/20230924_132043.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2036" data-original-width="3088" height="211" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhz1q0TuuArDRMMJQnKYLdsvJsROSxiGhJL6hNlBZhwlVxlPq3YamAsLO1x3FDI9Z_3funZztW8__Awc8VDK_AVrU45hMXt6bcRAQsr6xR2QqmIiMcQX2iYSiRXWZr4qK0mIHw_uaNdVdh4-FBsgrkQoxBCafF6bR_e3vNKuACoG5Gujo9Q3Ai9k3DQWys8/s320/20230924_132043.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><div><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">The wheel now bound and the sails set, the crew puts match to the cord and the order is given to abandon ship: the old hull becomes alight and the sleeping enemy is awoken to the terror of a fireship being launched right in their faces.</div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjfhqXLWNTDfVwf91Uat9GUB5VWeZ9O3JLrdDggg6l8SXXczlQLIcbJtcLAqg-3OOwCr8zjdsNa4euHgsilIohRTN_IOzTkPggtXB_Ec0FuDWzaQ6-AwINUvB5csaUUIvoRbHHvugudXt7_WqMDi00kvNGyNs9D8vJBqNLDp23B_p2hbsjsEjJ6P6T3LeGx/s3500/20230924_132206.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2072" data-original-width="3500" height="189" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjfhqXLWNTDfVwf91Uat9GUB5VWeZ9O3JLrdDggg6l8SXXczlQLIcbJtcLAqg-3OOwCr8zjdsNa4euHgsilIohRTN_IOzTkPggtXB_Ec0FuDWzaQ6-AwINUvB5csaUUIvoRbHHvugudXt7_WqMDi00kvNGyNs9D8vJBqNLDp23B_p2hbsjsEjJ6P6T3LeGx/s320/20230924_132206.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><div><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">The ship crashes into the three galleys anchored on the northern side of the bay, and fires begin to spread quickly. This is entertaining for me in an odd way, because a real-world 17th to 18th century naval power would be scraping for resources much the same way as I do now, I believe. So, although there are projections to buy new hulls into the fleet, there is much to do to re-work and re-rig old ones.</p><span><a name='more'></a></span><p style="text-align: justify;">Currently I have the following vessels and the following plans with them:</p><p style="text-align: justify;">Have to update the rigging and sea base only:</p><p style="text-align: justify;"></p><ul><li>Dryckynd, scratchbuilt Duch-style 80-gun (not yet shown here, although really proud of this one)</li><li>Nuestra Senhora Santa Maria, ex-Revell Victory</li><li>Le Flaumberge, a Revell Spanish Galleon conversion (perhaps a lick of paint too)</li><li>Arca d'Imperatrice Schiavona, a Heller La Couronne conversion</li><li>3D-printed frigates (perhaps with a full rig on the hull 'in ordinary')</li><li>Tajni Mölyem and Dachshund</li><li>Galleys</li></ul><p></p><p style="text-align: justify;">Needs major refurbishment along with rigging & basing:</p><p style="text-align: justify;"></p><ul><li>two Revell Spanish Galleon hulls, the Konung Harald and the Dreichend</li><li>La Pépé, a Heller La Couronne conversion</li></ul><div style="text-align: justify;">Most of this involves dusting them off, adding more detailed gunports, working on the prows, raising quarterdecks etc. I'm really sorry I can't get more of the Revell Galleon because it is a great conversion material, and I'm more of a kitbasher/scratchbuilder guy at heart, however comfortable 3D printing is.</div><p></p><p style="text-align: justify;">A total rebuild is required:</p><p style="text-align: justify;"></p><ul><li>HMS Worcester, scratchbuilt</li></ul><p></p><p style="text-align: justify;">WIP:</p><p style="text-align: justify;"></p><ul><li>A 3D printed 74, has only got the masts installed</li></ul><div>In the pipeline:</div><div><ul><li>I would like more smaller (5th, 6th or unrated) vessels to go with ships of the line</li><li>I've also got the file for the San José, which I think I'll have printed shortly (or scale the ADW frigate up which failed to print the last time)</li></ul></div><p></p><p style="text-align: justify;">I'm also thinking about a universal paint scheme and interchangeable banners, so most ships could be used as parts of different forces. This does not affect the Insolencian ships with their red sides, I like those too much.</p>Andrew McCoryhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18203034461676669716noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5375223151643195646.post-21725618494355646142023-10-02T09:44:00.000+02:002023-10-02T09:44:10.500+02:00Upping My Naval Game<p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj2ikS-OqIzkTlDdb1x0c2V-LAoUiZY0lPdygae3Vt_W83RfJVIQ4gXqvtptMwBm7rhWmTfLV-YAB_A5JPqEQqCThtuFOocVy4cmppIQ7LQUl2AsRcyLv0NbVJSx73VerDrhZjKp03kiHps39DwsViIyl2e0N8_di25zC7yjMoDKToTjaXo5JRlv6wRF_Ob/s3244/IMG_20231001_171225.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2176" data-original-width="3244" height="215" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj2ikS-OqIzkTlDdb1x0c2V-LAoUiZY0lPdygae3Vt_W83RfJVIQ4gXqvtptMwBm7rhWmTfLV-YAB_A5JPqEQqCThtuFOocVy4cmppIQ7LQUl2AsRcyLv0NbVJSx73VerDrhZjKp03kiHps39DwsViIyl2e0N8_di25zC7yjMoDKToTjaXo5JRlv6wRF_Ob/s320/IMG_20231001_171225.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">As mentioned in the previous post, until I can purchase more ships, I'll start upgrading my current collection with more elaborate rigging and textured sea bases. Thus, instead of downscaling the 1/600 Turner Miniatures file, I'm going to scale my ADW ships up to 1/500 or so, just as the previous models. It's actually not that much of a price difference.</p><p style="text-align: justify;">Being incontent with my current collection is mostly down to unfinished rigging and bases, which I'm going to remedy by taking out the collection again, and upgrading them a little bit. Some ships which were too large to keep in containers also need a good dusting off.</p><p style="text-align: justify;">My plans involve adding more running rigging, ratlines from plastic broom bristles (at least to the lower parts), and texturing the sea bases with three-dimensional waves. I'll also add some more details and highlights to the sails. My attempts with a sea effect were so far unsatisfactory (except for <a href="https://randomncreative.blogspot.com/2020/01/revell-11200-hms-king-george-v.html" target="_blank">this one</a> maybe), but a good amount of acrylic paste, PVA, tissue paper and such will hopefully see to that I succeed this time. </p>Andrew McCoryhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18203034461676669716noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5375223151643195646.post-71374084567236324522023-09-08T09:55:00.000+02:002023-09-08T09:55:08.050+02:00Naval Scale Consolidation<p style="text-align: justify;">So the sailing warships I made until recently are quite large, about 1/500 scale or so. However, my table surface is a lot smaller and the models occupy a lot of space in the hobby drawer, so I thought I should switch to a smaller scale for economic (?) reasons. Of course I've got the paper models from earlier, and they are quite fine for some action, but I just like the look of three-dimensional craft sailing on the imaginary seas.</p><p style="text-align: justify;">I pondered what scale should I switch to. 1/1200 seemed too small, as I wanted nice and detailed vessels, so I settled with 1/700, the undeniable advantage of that scale being that it is supported by Warlord Games, and they can send stuff over the Channel VAT-free.</p><p style="text-align: justify;">Although I prefer earlier period (17th to early 18th century) models, their standard Age of Sail ships, mostly the merchantmen (also some galleons and galleys), plus some 3D prints should suffice for the while. I have found the Turner Miniatures ADW designs, and fortunately my local on-demand 3D printing service allows me to re-scale the 1/600 models to 1/700.</p><p style="text-align: justify;">For the while I do not wish to dispose of the larger ships, but it might soon come to that, once there is enough smaller models to replace them. </p>Andrew McCoryhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18203034461676669716noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5375223151643195646.post-76714699162719586042023-08-01T09:07:00.003+02:002023-08-01T09:07:42.845+02:00Perry HYW Showcase<p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgQfNN45dACRvXey0HyDGU0bnasHe4CDaanEkkJz72B_Mh5Ul4xjVPCmVoCZIzD-0OMTa4vicJG5ypzX7LciiuHoDegL7iC8sli7UvDgjEC37vddYHnx-pcuOwur1HF7Aa0ruwW9YubI7irjcruVq-KAdk9BCNNNTZ8eVJ75gvwhPo8TixUyN-7DaJGmg/s2352/IMG_20230501_131404.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1496" data-original-width="2352" height="204" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgQfNN45dACRvXey0HyDGU0bnasHe4CDaanEkkJz72B_Mh5Ul4xjVPCmVoCZIzD-0OMTa4vicJG5ypzX7LciiuHoDegL7iC8sli7UvDgjEC37vddYHnx-pcuOwur1HF7Aa0ruwW9YubI7irjcruVq-KAdk9BCNNNTZ8eVJ75gvwhPo8TixUyN-7DaJGmg/s320/IMG_20230501_131404.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><div><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">Although I do not doubt their historical authenticity, I mostly used these Perry figs to make "Generic Fantasy Henchmen" for small skirmishes, working on them in groups of six or so.
